Public Involvement
The Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) encourages members of the public to get involved in its work. Patients, their carers and Patient Interest Groups are vitally important to the work of the SMC.
The Patient and Public Involvement Group (PAPIG) is responsible for ensuring that the patient/carer perspective is always taken into consideration by the SMC.
Patient Interest Groups are able to collate comments from a number of patients and carers and provide these in the form of a submission of evidence to SMC. These submissions are an important part of the SMC’s assessment process. To help Patient Interest Groups make effective submissions we provide a Guidance and Template document SMC are currently piloting a new Patient Interest Group Submission Template and Guidance and it is anticipated that this will be put in place from early next year with worked examples submitted by Patient Interest Groups who have participated in the pilot.
The SMC is currently funding a part-time post of Public Involvement Officer, which is based with the Long-Term Conditions Alliance Scotland. The Public Involvement Officer is engaged in a number of initiatives which are designed to help make it easier for patient organisations to make submissions to the SMC and can provide advice and guidance for those who wish to make a submission. Further information can be obtained at www.ltcas.org.uk. Please contact the SMC Public Involvement Officer on 0141 404 0231 or by email at linda.mcglynn@ltcas.org.uk weekday mornings.
